Sam Rosson, 82, died at home on Easter Sunday, April 20th, 2025, just weeks before his 83rd birthday. Born in Oklahoma to Ira and Clara Rosson, Sam spent his early years in California, graduating from El Cerrito High School in 1960 before settling in the Portland area in 1973. It was there that he answered a lifelong calling to public service by joining the Portland Police force. Sam served with dedication for thirty years, retiring in 2003. He viewed his role in law enforcement as a vocation from God – an opportunity to make a lasting impact on the lives of others, which he did with integrity and compassion.
Following his retirement, Sam embraced a full and active life. He enjoyed bowling, watching movies, tackling the daily crossword puzzle, and staying physically active. More than anything, he cherished quality time with family.
Faith and family were always at the center of Sam’s life. After converting to Catholicism as an adult, he became a devoted and practicing Catholic. His faith was visible in his daily life – through regular prayer, reception of the sacraments, and a deep trust in God. Heaven was the goal of his earthly journey, and he lived in a way that pointed others toward that same hope. Sam was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He shared fifty years of marriage with his beloved wife, Jeanne. Together they raised three children, and he remained ever-present in their lives with his consistent and supportive love. His life was one of unwavering devotion to his loved ones and a commitment to guiding others toward faith in Christ.
Sam is survived by his wife, Jeanne; their three children -- Angela; Tim, his wife Jessica and their five children (Carolina, Dominic, David, Evan, and Claver); and Chris, his wife Amy and their three children (Alexander, Anna, and Zachary); his siblings Pat, Martha, Jerry, John, and Margaret, and his cousin Larry. Sam leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and purpose that will live on through them and all those blessed to know him.
Though Sam is deeply missed, his family takes comfort in the joy of his eternal home and the promise of being reunited with him again. His life was a testament to devotion, service, and hope, and his memory will be cherished forever.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Holy Rosary Church in Portland, Oregon on April 26th. Sam is interred at Gethsemani Cemetery in Happy Valley, Oregon.
