Michael Meltzer passed away peacefully on March 24, 2023 after complications of heart failure. He was always surrounded by his loving family. The day began with snow that turned to rain but at the time of Michael’s passing the sun was shining down on him.
Michael left behind his wife Luong of almost 30 years, his son Kai Meltzer, his daughter Chelsea Marie Braun and her husband Nikolai Braun, grandchild Ione Braun, stepson Tony Le, his wife Angela Le and grandchildren Kaelani and Kameron Le, his sister Susan Meltzer; cousins; nieces; nephews and dear friends that he saw as family.
Michael Meltzer was born October 11, 1948 in Brooklyn, New York. At 18 he moved away to college and studied, lived and worked in Massachusetts, California, Mexico, Texas, and Oregon. Michael was a dedicated and brilliant student. His education included: Williams College (B.A., magna cum laude, 1970); University of California at San Diego (Ph.D., 1978); Yale University (J.D., 1981) where he was Phi Beta Kappa.
After completing his Ph.D. in the pioneering field of Social Anthropology at University of California, San Diego, he attended Yale Law School, completing his J.D. in 1981. He was admitted to the Texas State bar in 1981, then admitted to the Orgon State bar in 1985 where he practiced law until his retirement in 2010. His professional affiliations included: Oregon State Bar (Past Member: Executive Committee, International Law Section; Executive Committee, Securities Regulation Section; Board of Directors, Latin America Trade Organization (LATCO); Legal Ethics Committee); American Immigration Lawyers Association. (Managing Partner). Special Agencies: Bureau of Citizenship Immigration Services; Executive Office of Immigration Review; Administrative Appeals Office. Languages: Spanish.
