Lawrence Richard Craig passed away on Monday, May 18, 2026. Born in Portland in 1941, Larry spent most of his life there and graduated from Grant High School in 1960. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force following graduation. While in the Air Force, he was stationed at a SAC Tanker Base in Plattsburg, NY, where he dispersed as a backup crew member on a KC-97 during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and completed a 15-month deployment to Peshawar Air Base in Peshawar, Pakistan, where he performed a variety of surveillance and courier duties throughout Southwest Asia, India, and as far east as Hong Kong as part of the Air Force Security Service.
After returning to Portland in 1964, Larry met Sandra Huber, and they married in 1968. They enjoyed 49 years of marriage before Sandy’s passing in 2017.
A lifelong public servant, Larry’s career spanned more than 30 years in criminal justice. He served with the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, the county’s Department of Justice Services, and later the State Court Administrator’s Office in Salem.
Larry loved the outdoors and spent many weekends hiking, camping, and cross-country skiing with his family and friends. He was involved in Dave and Brian’s Scout troop, leading hikes around Mount Hood and climbs of Mount St. Helens, Mount Hood, and South Sister. He also enjoyed photography and sharing his adventures through slide presentations.
Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra, and his son, Brian. He is survived by his daughter, Allison; his son, David; his daughter-in-law, Toni; and his grandchildren, Carter, Sadie, and Andrew.
