Joan “Joani” Elizabeth (Fitzgerald) Concannon
December 28, 1950 — April 19, 2026
Joan “Joani” Elizabeth (Fitzgerald) Concannon, 75, of Battle Ground, Washington, was called home to the Lord on April 19, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s dementia, which she faced with quiet determination. That same determination was a gift she brought to every part of her life.
Born in Portland, Oregon, to Edward and Grace Fitzgerald, Joani was the third of eight children. She graduated from St. Rita Catholic School and Marycrest High School, an all-girls high school, and later earned her dental assistant degree from the University of Oregon Dental School.
On April 29, 1972, she married the love of her life Michael Concannon at St. Rita Catholic Church. Together, they built a life rooted in faith, love and devotion, sharing nearly 54 years of marriage. A lifelong seamstress, Joani expressed her creativity and care through her craft, even making all of her bridesmaids’ dresses for her wedding.
Joani and Michael welcomed three children into their lives. Their daughter, Michelle, was the first baby of the New Year in 1975, born just 30 seconds after midnight. Sons Jeremy and Matthew followed in the years after. Her three children completed her world. She cherished her role as a mother and poured her love into raising her family, which also included her beloved black lab, Callie.
Joani had a servant’s heart and was always there to help others. She taught Sunday school, started the hot lunch program at St. Pius X Grade School, and cared for the babies of young mothers working to finish high school in the Beaverton School District. She believed with absolute conviction that loving and helping others was the doorway to everything good.
In addition to her devotion to family and community, Joani was a partner at Concannon Paper, where she worked daily to help ensure the business ran smoothly. She also loved playing golf and had three holes-in-one—something she was incredibly humble about. You wouldn’t know about her golfing abilities, unless her family was bragging about it. Joani wore many hats but her favorite role was Grandma! She was the best!
Joani is survived by her husband, Mike; her children, Michelle (Mike) Lansing, Jeremy (Melanie) Concannon, Matthew (Koreen) Concannon; her grandchildren, Lilly, Stella, Charlie, Ben, Ashlyn, Zavier, and Kayla; and her siblings, Karin (George) Bellcoff, Lori (Dave) Haberman, Ted (Kathi) Fitzgerald, Bob (Chris) Fitzgerald, Jeanette (Brad) Moyes, Meme (Ron) Sherman, and Matthew Fitzgerald. Joani was also loved by many cousins, nieces, nephews, and a multitude of friends from all walks of life.
A Funeral Mass for Joani will be offered at St. Rita Catholic Church, located at 10029 NE Prescott St, Portland, OR 97220, on Tuesday, May 5, 2026 at 11:00am, preceded by a Rosary beginning at 10:30am. A reception will held immediately following these services.
A Private Family Committal Service will be held at Mt Calvary Catholic Cemetery on Wednesday, May 20, 2026 at 12:30pm.
"Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her.
May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God,
Rest in Peace.
Amen."
