Donna Marie Klover

July 9, 1928 — June 23, 2023

Lake Oswego

Donna Klover passed peacefully surrounded by family and prayer on June 23, 2023 at Mary’s Woods in Lake Oswego, Ore. Our lovely, compassionate mother lived an extraordinary life for a little girl born on a 1,000-acre dairy farm in northern Wisconsin, July 9, 1928 in Laona. After college she started teaching and married the love of her life and high school sweetheart, Ervin Klover in 1951, who passed away in 1988. Their journey took them to San Diego for Erv’s Navy service. His career with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad led them back to Wisconsin, Illinois, Sioux City, Iowa, and settled in idyllic Portland, Ore.

Donna and Erv lived an adventurous life and were devoted to and raised seven children: five daughters and two sons. Life was busy but they wove in fun times by taking the whole bunch on many camping outings and road trip vacations to many destinations including biannual trips up north to visit the farm for Christmas and family cabin on Silver Lake during the summers.

Donna’s home was always warm and welcoming with delicious homecooked meals and open to many friends coming and going. Donna studied and played piano and saxophone. Her artistic ability showed throughout her life in many forms: silver jewelry design, seamstress of fashionable clothing for herself and children, artistic needlework, knitting, and watercolor painting as her favorite art medium. Her stunning paintings are treasured by her children and grandchildren including annual Christmas card watercolors.

Donna delighted in cross country skiing, river rafting and hiking with her dear friends.  She was a prolific reader and thespian through age 94.  Donna and Erv were avid golfers and world travelers.

Donna went on to earn her Masters degree in Counseling from Portland State University at the age of 50. After her children were raised, she was appointed as a Senior Career Consultant at a career counseling firm in Portland. Donna also volunteered as a VIEWS peer counselor, helping older adults for 20 years, as well as many other volunteer positions she held throughout her life.

Donna and Erv’s guiding force in their lives has been their shared Catholic faith and spirituality which continued to grow over the years. Fifty years ago, Donna and Erv also became lifetime members of the Holy Spirit Community (Opus Spiritus Sancti). Donna served as International Leader of Lay People (CAC) for six years.  Donna’s work had a tremendous impact on the Holy Spirit Community world-wide. Her duties have taken her around the world to various Holy Spirit communities such as India, Africa, Tanzania, Philippines, Germany, United States and beyond.

Donna developed precious life-long bonds throughout the world-wide Holy Spirit Community and held a deep connection to the ten young novice Sisters who came to the United States 50 years ago from India to train to become nuns.  Donna was asked to teach them how to speak English and understand life in America.  The Sisters were greatly loved and became part of her family.

Donna is survived by her children, Steve Klover (Sue), Gwen Brennan (Mike), Don Klover (Judi), Sharon Wardian (Pat), Mary Wade (Mike), and Julie Klover. Her  18 beloved grandchildren, Angela, Kellie, Jenny, Sean, Stephanie, Jay, Emily, Amanda, Phillip, James, Katie, Alex, Claire, Jack, Jenna, Tony, Kayla and Jessie. Her 24 precious great-grandchildren, Sydnee, Lily, Rayne, Raylan, Tobin, Emelia, Kendall, Kaleigh, Isaiah, Bria, Carter, Penelope, Remy, Felix, Adaline, Ayssa, Libby, Gabe, Judah, Evie, James, Hunter, Hadley, and Harlow. Two siblings, Patty LaPlante and Fred Alderton. All her dear nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents Felix and Nina Alderton, brother, Felix Russell Alderton, daughter Gail Winterly, grandsons Shawn Klover and Eric Stowe.

Donna, the perennial classy dresser, will be remembered for her wonderful smile, laughter, her compassion, unconditional love, and deep spirituality. May she rest in peace knowing she was deeply loved by so many. Donna’s path to heaven was softened by her great faith.

Eternal rest grant unto Donna O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon her. May the soul of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen
