Anne Jeanne Kangas Eng, 83, died on January 24, 2026 in a care home in Portland, Oregon from complications associated with advanced Parkinson’s Disease.
Anne was born in Butte, Montana on January 20, 1943 to Elmer and Mary Kangas. Growing up in Battle Ground, Washington and Scappoose, Oregon, she developed a deep love for animals, especially her horse, Cindy—part quarter horse and part mustang—whose wild spirit she was deeply proud of. As a teenager, she once rode Cindy bareback at a local rodeo and ran the barrels faster than the mounted cowboys, a story that became part of family lore.
After graduating from high school, Anne spent four years among the Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood in Reading, Pennsylvania, before returning to Portland, Oregon to complete her nursing degree at the University of Portland. While there, she met Stephen Eng, and the two married in 1969. They relocated to Nashville, Tennessee in 1979, where they raised their four children.
For many years, Anne worked as a highly skilled and respected nurse, caring for countless patients in the intensive care units and emergency rooms of the Nashville Veterans Affairs Medical Center and other area hospitals. Her compassion and tender care eased the suffering of those she served, and she set an example of competent professionalism for her colleagues and coworkers.
Anne was a loving mother, a devoted wife, and a dedicated follower of the teachings of the Catholic Church. She identified as a farm girl her entire life, growing flowers and vegetables in her garden and raising dogs and cats alongside her children.
Anne is survived by her children Mary Eng, Michael Eng, Gabriel Eng, and Natalie Wiener; a young granddaughter, Freya Eng; and her siblings Richard Kangas, Matt Kangas, Mike Kangas, Mary Jones, and Elizabeth McNally.
Services will be held on February 3, 2026 at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church (1112 SE 41st Ave, Portland, OR 97214). Church doors open for prayer at 10am, rosary and viewing at 11am, and a requiem mass at 12pm. Burial to follow at 2:30pm at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery (333 SW Skyline Blvd, Portland, OR 97221).
