Most Rev. Peter L. Smith

Auxiliary Bishop

 

Bishop Peter Smith is Vicar General, Moderator of the Curia and Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Portland. He is involved in long term cemetery planning and communication of directives established by the Archbishop which are aimed at fulfilling both the financial and spiritual obligations of Mt. Calvary & Gethsemani Catholic Funeral Services.

Daniel Serres

Director of Archdiocesan Catholic Cemeteries & Mortuaries

 

Daniel graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mortuary Science from the University of Minnesota, and has amassed 35 years of experience as a funeral director, embalmer, and cemetery counselor in several states. His Catholic faith guides his management of Gethsemani Funeral Home. 

Eric Thomas

Funeral Director

& Cemetery Counselor

Eric is both a Cemetery Counselor at Gethsemani Catholic Cemetery and a Funeral Director for Gethsemani Funeral Home. Eric has an Associate’s Degree in Funeral Service from Mt. Hood Community College and has worked in a number of funeral homes in the Portland area for over 20 years. He is licensed as a Funeral Director/Embalmer in both Oregon and Washington.

Deacon David Hammes

Chaplain

Deacon David was ordained as a permanent deacon in November 2005 for the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon. From 2005-2007, he served with Rachel’s Vineyard, a Catholic organization that helps women & men suffering from post-abortion trauma.

He served as permanent deacon at St. Cecilia Church, Beaverton for nine years, and is currently assigned to St. Anthony Catholic Church in Tigard.

In addition to that, in March 2020, he was assigned to Mt. Calvary & Gethsemani Catholic Funeral Services to preside over funeral liturgies.

He presides over the "Catholic Funeral Liturgy outside of Mass,” which can be held in the Chapel at Gethsemani Funeral Home & at graveside services for the “Catholic Rite of Committal, to include the Rite of Final Commendation” at both Mt. Calvary & Gethsemani Catholic Cemeteries.

He has also presided over Catholic graveside services at Willamette National Cemetery.

Trish Lockhart

Funeral Director

& Cemetery Counselor

Trish was born and raised in Portland, Oregon and attended  both St. Thomas More Catholic School and Jesuit High School. In 2017 she graduated top of her Funeral Service Education program at Mt. Hood Community College. Helping those in need has always been a calling for Trish; she is incredibly grateful to be a Funeral Director/Embalmer and Cemetery Counselor at Gethsemani where she can help families when they need it most. In her rare moments of free time Trish can be found either gardening or rock-tumbling while listening to Tom Waits.

Suzi Thomas

Funeral Director & Cemetery Counselor

 

Suzi began her involvement in the funeral industry when her Parents purchased a funeral home when she was a child. As an adult, she wanted to follow the passion she had in her heart in serving families and has been in the industry for 20 years. Sher holds an Associates of Business Management and is a licensed Funeral Director in Oregon, Washington, and California. Suzi is a Funeral Director and Cemetery Counselor at Gethsemani and Mt. Calvary.

Maria Lee

Cemetery Counselor & Funeral Director Assistant

 

Maria Lee started working at Gethsemani Cemetery in 2011, and left in 2016 to briefly work at the Archdiocese of Portland Pastoral Center. Her passion for working with families who have lost a loved one, or who are planning ahead for the future, brought her back to Gethsemani once again in 2021 as a Cemetery Counselor and Funeral Director Assistant. She is excited to be back doing the work she has always loved and believed in. Maria shares her home with her husband, George, her 13 year old stepdaughter, five birds, one dog, and a one-eyed turtle named V. She and her family attend Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in SE Portland.

Funeral Directors' Assistant

 

Jim joined the staff of Gethsemani and Mt. Calvary in July of 2020 as a funeral directors’ assistant, in both office administration and assisting families.  Jim is a lifelong member of Ascension Parish in Portland, from baptism to grade school and still involved with his parish today.  Jim started his funeral career in 1998 as a Motorcycle Escort Officer, providing funeral escort services throughout the Metro Area, this is where he met numerous funeral directors and served countless families.  Eventually he moved from Motorcycles to driving funeral coaches along with assisting funeral directors.  Jim’s passion is caring for people and doing his part to make a tough time much easier for the families he serves.

Spencer Harrington

Apprentice Funeral Director/Embalmer & Cemetery Counselor

 

Spencer Harrington is one of the Apprentice Funeral Director/Embalmer and Cemetery Counselors at Mt. Calvary and Gethsemani Catholic Funeral Services. Spencer was born and raised in Oregon City Oregon and graduated from the Mt. Hood Community College funeral service education program in 2021. He is a fourth-generation parishioner at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in SE Portland. Spencer feels very Blessed and privileged to be given the responsibility and honor of ministering to his community by carrying out one of the most important Corporal Works of Mercy.

Pat Balfe

Grounds Superintendent

 

Pat is responsible for the grounds day-to-day operations of both Mt. Calvary & Gethsemani Catholic Cemeteries. We strive to maintain our cemeteries as some of the best kept in the entire state, with over 130 acres to care for and 500 annual interments, Pat’s efforts are essential in helping us meet that goal.
